Woke up this morning thinking about this immensely shitty twitter take. https://twitter.com/JentoInfinity/status/1136260622155505666

I think the LSW is a great counterbalance against that kind of gatekeeping.

Sad thing is, if she'd said "Circ workers at public libraries don't get enough respect and if you haven't done it yourself you don't know what it's like," everyone would have agreed.

Ayup.

At my current job, we don't keep scissors at the reference desk, not even in the drawer. Tape and stapler, yes, but no scissors. Wanna know why? Because several years ago (before my time, but my boss was here), a patron asked to borrow the scissors then tried to stab the librarian with them. We also keep the little plastic dish of paper clips under the counter after a patron last year grabbed a handful and threw them in my clerk's face.

(and I've never worked Circ, but I worked in retail for two years and fast food for four. And was a secretary and receptionist after that. Lots of customer service and phone experience, just not at libraries.)

I tried to read it with a more generous heart and saw it as someone who is under-appreciated, over-worked, frustrated, and didn't express herself in the best way. The pile on people engaged in wasn't helpful and certainly wasn't going to change her mind. If anything, that makes people dig their heels in, become more bitter, and be more stubborn. It was one post on social media.

And why don't people pile on the men who regularly have "shitty takes" on librarianship? It honestly seems to happen more to women.

^saw some piling on, but a lot of people trying to gently point out things and who she was hurting, and she kept doubling down and even getting nasty. This is ALA to me, though - that public libraries are the only image of libraries. SLA has been trying for like 100 years to talk about how librarians and <shudder> info pros are doing all sorts of things.

I saw more independent of the actual post. There was much snark on Twitter last night. Yes to the ALA image of libraries. I'd agree with that. And a very narrow view of public libraries, at that.

It's really hard for me to give Real Librarian(tm) rhetoric any kind of kind reading, because (as I explained yesterday in a thread I subtweeted because yeah, there was a pileon and I didn't wanna be part of it) librarians have been trying to exclude me my whole freakin' career. If it had been just that person, that'd be one thing -- but "I'm a Real Librarian and you ain't" is a running theme in librarian discourse and I am no longer willing to be silent about it.

Whoa, I forgot to post this to LSW and you guys actually follow me? Weird.

Jill, I also tried to read it with a more generous cast of mind, but saw the author first double down https://twitter.com/JentoInfinity/status/1136304452246409216 then go with a "why is everyone so butthurt" defense https://twitter.com/JentoInfinity/status/1136324315698335744 both of which I find to be in bad faith.

Also, show me a man with a shitty take and I'll rip him too as I have in the past.

I could provide a list, but I'm really not interested in that.I think I've got the worst ones blocked on Twitter anyway because they've been so horrid.

Mostly, I think I'm overly weary of these sorts of things from both sides. We need to stop with the whole "my job is harder than your job" nonsense and value everyone's work, including those without the MLS or MLIS or MLISHUTUPABOUTITALREADY.

People don't pile on men with shitty takes because they tend to be "thought leaders".

Also I'm in the "fuck all gate keeping and propping up this neoliberal bullshit that exploits good intentions" stage so... YOLO

That thread - so many elements of it - just makes me so sad. Gate keeping and dividing the who is "real" does not help anyone - our users/patrons/scholars or those working in libraries.

(I want to make some anti-"management" joke that's so deep in labor theory that it will probably piss off people.)

I agree with Jill that this person feels under-appreciated, but the person has also been an asshole. I have no time for the doubling down. But I don't really do hot takes on social media, just in my own office to myself.
