The fighting is no longer just in rural areas but in towns and cities as well, with increasing numbers of civilians being killed or internally displaced. Whole villages and neighbourhoods are being reduced to rubble. Dutch journalist Fréderike Geerdink was the only foreign journalist based in the region until she was expelled in September last year.
