"Gangkou Temple priests on Saturday held a seance prior to purifying and burning a mysterious boat that washed ashore in the Aogu Wetlands (鰲鼓溼地) and was discovered last week by Aogu residents in Chiayi County’s Dongshih Township (東石). It was presumed the boat may have been used for Taoist ritual spellcraft. Lin Mao-hsien (林茂賢), an ethnographer and associate professor at National Taichung University of Education’s Department of Taiwanese Languages and Literature, said the boat was a spellcraft ship that was set adrfit by members of the Zoulingshan (走靈山) sect of Xi Wangmu (西王母), or “Queen Mother of the West” worshipers in Hualien County, to dispel bad spirits or bad luck. The boat caused concern among villagers, prompting Dongshih Township Mayor Lin Chia-ying (林佳瑩) to go to the local temple for the goddess Matsu for a solution. Through a medium, Matsu said that the boat had to be disposed of between 3pm and 5pm on Saturday. The purification ritual was organized by the Gangkou Temple (港口宮), which worships Matsu as its main deity."
