Greece runestones - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greece_runestones
"The Greece runestones (Swedish: Greklandsstenarna) are about 30 runestones containing information related to voyages made by Norsemen to the Byzantine Empire. They were made during the Viking Age until about 1100 and were engraved in the Old Norse language with Scandinavian runes. All the stones have been found in modern-day Sweden, the majority in Uppland (18 runestones) and Södermanland (7 runestones). Most were inscribed in memory of members of the Varangian Guard who never returned home, but a few inscriptions mention men who returned with wealth, and a boulder in Ed was engraved on the orders of a former officer of the Guard." ‎· Eivind
what was the old Nordic writing system and rune system? did they adopt the Greek alphabet? ‎· SaeedTheGiraffe ?
It was Runic, yes. Adapted from the Latin script which again was adapted from Greek (which again was adapted from the Phoenician/Canaanite alphabet). A result of earlier Germanic contact with the Roman Empire, not these river cruises :) ‎· Eivind
btw their route goes all the way into Persian territory, did any linguistic exchange take place? :D ‎· SaeedTheGiraffe ?
That is possible, @saeedgreen. Also, before the Turkic speakers had moved this far west, there were lots of contact between Iranian and Germanic tribes. My favorite example is the Alans who allied with the Vandals (and the Suebi), crossed Europe, settled in the Iberian peninsula for a while, and then crossed over to North Africa, setting up shop around Carthage. ‎· Eivind
ah that must be before the Islamic invasion of Persia, ‎· SaeedTheGiraffe ?
This was before Islam, yes. ~100-500 CE. ‎· Eivind
it's the first time I see CE, learnt something today :D, better than the year of our lord I guess :D ‎· SaeedTheGiraffe ?
I'm happy with it, but opinions are divided. Some think it's BLASPHEMY, some think it's POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD, some think it's a slippery slope because next the heathens will demand origo to be moved to a less Jesus-y time. ‎· Eivind
