bu filmin özelliği, çevrecilerin içinden çıkıp gene çevrecilere yönelmiş bir eleştiri oluşu bence. benim bildiğim çevreci filmlerin, kitapların çoğu hedeflerine petrol ya da silah sanayiini koyuyorlar. bazen toplumdaki genel "duyarsızlıktan" da bahsediyorlar. yukarıdaki film ana akım yani meşhur, güçlü, görünür çevrecilerin kitleleri aldattığını, çevreci hareketin önünü kestiğini söylüyor. en açıktan saldırdığı kişi 350.org'un kurucusu bill mckibben. mckibben'ın rockefeller vakfından para aldığını itirafa zorlandığı kısım bayağı komik. filmin söylediğine göre ana akım çevreciler, finans ile silikon vadisi ile "yenilenebilir" enerji sermayesi hatta petrolcülerin bir kesimi ile sıkı bağlar geliştirmiş. aslında çevreciler bu sermaye gruplarının faydasına kullanılan bir araca dönüşmüş gibiler.

Study shows erosion of ozone layer responsible for mass extinction event "Researchers at the University of Southampton have shown that an extinction event 360 million years ago, that killed much of the Earth's plant and freshwater aquatic life, was caused by a brief breakdown of the ozone layer that shields the Earth from damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This is a newly discovered extinction mechanism with profound implications for our warming world today." https://phys.org/news/2020-05-erosion-ozone-layer-responsible-mass.html?utm_source=nwletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=daily-nwletter&fbclid=IwAR01cLqPXa6b-6edR0V9GCdsqFESSAVxvUOtwxQoDL7vi8OsOb9oB0wCleM

Comment

The scientists concluded that, during a time of rapid global warming, the ozone layer collapsed for a short period, exposing life on Earth to harmful levels of UV radiation and triggering a mass extinction event on land and in shallow water at the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary. Following melting of the ice sheets, the climate was very warm, with the increased heat above continents pushing more naturally generated ozone destroying chemicals into the upper atmosphere. This let in high levels of UV-B radiation for several thousand years.

“Stop the Money Pipeline”: 150 Arrested at Protests Exposing Wall Street’s Link to Climate Crisis "Nearly 150 people were arrested on Capitol Hill Friday in a climate protest led by Academy Award-winning actor and activist Jane Fonda. Fonda has been leading weekly climate demonstrations in Washington, D.C., known as “Fire Drill Fridays,” since October. For her last and 14th protest, actors Martin Sheen and Joaquin Phoenix, indigenous anti-pipeline activist Tara Houska, journalist Naomi Klein and dozens more lined up to get arrested as they demanded a mass uprising and swift political action to thwart the climate crisis. Fonda then marched with supporters down Pennsylvania Avenue to a Chase Bank branch where environmentalist Bill McKibben and dozens of others were occupying the space to draw attention to the bank’s ties to the fossil fuel industry. Ten, including McKibben, were arrested. The day of action was the launch of “Stop the Money Pipeline,” a campaign to halt the flow of cash from banks, investment firms and insurance companies to the fossil fuel industry. “Let us remember that we are not the criminals,” Naomi Klein told a crowd of protesters. “The criminals are the people who are letting this world burn for money.”" https://www.democracynow.org/2020/1/13/jane_fonda_fire_drill_fridays_washington

How the Plastics Industry Is Fighting to Keep Polluting the World "Pushes to “recycle” plastics are one element of a massive, industry-led effort to suppress meaningful efforts to reduce plastic waste." https://theintercept.com/2019/07/20/plastics-industry-plastic-recycling/

Comment

Over the decades, as production has grown exponentially, we’ve never managed to repurpose even one-tenth of our plastic waste. [...] Today, the plastics industry, estimated to be worth more than $4 trillion, generates more than 300 million tons of plastic a year according to the most recent records — nearly half of which is for single-use items, meaning that it will almost instantly become trash. [...] Some of that failure can be blamed on careless consumers, but much of the waste that is dutifully put into recycling bins and bags also gets landfilled and burned because there’s no market for it.

[...] Thailand, India, and Indonesia — where more than 80 percent of waste is mismanaged, according to data published in Science — are among the countries that now find themselves besieged with U.S. plastic that’s being illegally dumped and burned.

We humans also have plastic lodged in our bodies. The substance often sold to us as protection from contamination is in both food and water. Bottled water, sales of which are increasing in part because people are seeking alternatives to contaminated local water supplies, now contains plastic as well. A 2018 study found that 93 percent of bottled water samples contained microplastics. While all the big brands tested positive for microplastics, the worst was Nestlé Pure Life, which claims that its water “goes through a 12-step quality process, so you can trust every drop.”

Roy Bhaskar'dan #degrowth ve hypermobility (uçak ve araba yolculukları) üzerine, ölümünden sonra yayınlanan Enlightened Common Sense'ten:

(...) This will inexorably involve a simpler but inwardly richer and deeper existence .
This in turn will inevitably involve
(1) overall de-growth; and
(2) enhanced use of the underdeveloped powers of humanity, together with such
aids to them as IT technology.

Thus I think it has been shown beyond doubt that it is not possible to combine
ecological viability and further net growth. This is of course consistent with growth
in some sectors and some countries and with a radical redistribution of resources
and wealth. But overall it must be net de-growth. Of course, whether or not it is
possible to have capitalism and de-growth is a moot point.

An end to growth is not however the same as an end to development, in two senses. First, on the terrain of economics, in the context of a world of growing inequalities, there needs to be a radical redistribution in favour of the poor, sick and disabled, the young and the old, the oppressed and the needy. Together with this redistribution, we must encourage a flowering of new transitional and ecologically friendly technologies, discovered or invented and produced and functioning without any overall increase in use of energy. This must be accompanied by a profound reorganisation of our life-long learning, so that we learn to enjoy and share not just information, but knowledge, ideas and wisdom, and to become adept in the skills of the imagination and the use of empathy. Thus, in learning to become one with the other whom we are not (or think we are not), we learn that we need no longer bear the pain of the repression or exclusion of a part of ourselves.

 ‎· Pembe Mendiller
Comment

Second, development will take place at the level of the greater fulfilment of our individual and collective human nature consistently with our responsibilities to other species and unborn generations, that is, toward the goal of universal human flourishing or the free flourishing of each as a condition of the free flourishing of all.

 ‎· Pembe Mendiller
Comment

Enhanced use of our underdeveloped powers can be illustrated by considering the phenomenon of hypermobility, incessant travel in fuel-guzzling cars and planes. Is there any real need for most, perhaps 95 per cent, of the passenger flights from, say, Northern Europe or the USA to the continent of Australia? If one wants to visit Australia, perhaps to take in the Sydney Opera House or the Gold Coast or Uluru, why not watch a film or video of them or go on the Internet or make a telephone call to a friend there or read a book or talk to and empathise with someone who has been there. Of course, one will have to do some inner work, delve into our inward space a bit, use our imagination. But how much more rewarding this is and better for ourselves and the planet (including of course Australia) than a 20 hour flight! Again, who really needs to go to the Grand Canyon? At least just to see it when we can experience it on film? Who needs frequent face-to-face business meetings when we can web- or teleconference? Our aided imagination and consciousness generally can take the place of an enormous amount of current travel.

The connection has to do with a sense of group identity under threat, Hultman told me—an identity they perceive to be under threat from all sides. Besieged, as they see it, both by developing gender equality—Hultman pointed specifically to the shock some men felt at the #MeToo movement—and now climate activism’s challenge to their way of life, male reactionaries motivated by right-wing nationalism, anti-feminism, and climate denialism increasingly overlap, the three reactions feeding off of one another.
