How the Plastics Industry Is Fighting to Keep Polluting the World "Pushes to “recycle” plastics are one element of a massive, industry-led effort to suppress meaningful efforts to reduce plastic waste." https://theintercept.com/2019/07/20/plastics-industry-plastic-recycling/

Comment

Over the decades, as production has grown exponentially, we’ve never managed to repurpose even one-tenth of our plastic waste. [...] Today, the plastics industry, estimated to be worth more than $4 trillion, generates more than 300 million tons of plastic a year according to the most recent records — nearly half of which is for single-use items, meaning that it will almost instantly become trash. [...] Some of that failure can be blamed on careless consumers, but much of the waste that is dutifully put into recycling bins and bags also gets landfilled and burned because there’s no market for it.

[...] Thailand, India, and Indonesia — where more than 80 percent of waste is mismanaged, according to data published in Science — are among the countries that now find themselves besieged with U.S. plastic that’s being illegally dumped and burned.

We humans also have plastic lodged in our bodies. The substance often sold to us as protection from contamination is in both food and water. Bottled water, sales of which are increasing in part because people are seeking alternatives to contaminated local water supplies, now contains plastic as well. A 2018 study found that 93 percent of bottled water samples contained microplastics. While all the big brands tested positive for microplastics, the worst was Nestlé Pure Life, which claims that its water “goes through a 12-step quality process, so you can trust every drop.”

This in turn will inevitably involve
(1) overall de-growth; and
(2) enhanced use of the underdeveloped powers of humanity, together with such

Thus I think it has been shown beyond doubt that it is not possible to combine
ecological viability and further net growth. This is of course consistent with growth
in some sectors and some countries and with a radical redistribution of resources
and wealth. But overall it must be net de-growth. Of course, whether or not it is
possible to have capitalism and de-growth is a moot point.

An end to growth is not however the same as an end to development, in two senses. First, on the terrain of economics, in the context of a world of growing inequalities, there needs to be a radical redistribution in favour of the poor, sick and disabled, the young and the old, the oppressed and the needy. Together with this redistribution, we must encourage a flowering of new transitional and ecologically friendly technologies, discovered or invented and produced and functioning without any overall increase in use of energy. This must be accompanied by a profound reorganisation of our life-long learning, so that we learn to enjoy and share not just information, but knowledge, ideas and wisdom, and to become adept in the skills of the imagination and the use of empathy. Thus, in learning to become one with the other whom we are not (or think we are not), we learn that we need no longer bear the pain of the repression or exclusion of a part of ourselves.

Second, development will take place at the level of the greater fulfilment of our individual and collective human nature consistently with our responsibilities to other species and unborn generations, that is, toward the goal of universal human flourishing or the free flourishing of each as a condition of the free flourishing of all.

 ‎· tahta itici
Comment

Enhanced use of our underdeveloped powers can be illustrated by considering the phenomenon of hypermobility, incessant travel in fuel-guzzling cars and planes. Is there any real need for most, perhaps 95 per cent, of the passenger flights from, say, Northern Europe or the USA to the continent of Australia? If one wants to visit Australia, perhaps to take in the Sydney Opera House or the Gold Coast or Uluru, why not watch a film or video of them or go on the Internet or make a telephone call to a friend there or read a book or talk to and empathise with someone who has been there. Of course, one will have to do some inner work, delve into our inward space a bit, use our imagination. But how much more rewarding this is and better for ourselves and the planet (including of course Australia) than a 20 hour flight! Again, who really needs to go to the Grand Canyon? At least just to see it when we can experience it on film? Who needs frequent face-to-face business meetings when we can web- or teleconference? Our aided imagination and consciousness generally can take the place of an enormous amount of current travel.

Exporting countries – including the US – now will have to obtain consent from countries receiving contaminated, mixed or unrecyclable plastic waste. Currently, the US and other countries can send lower-quality plastic waste to private entities in developing countries without getting approval from their governments.

Pliocene and Eocene provide best analogs for near-future climates "The expected departure of future climates from those experienced in human history challenges efforts to adapt. Possible analogs to climates from deep in Earth’s geological past have been suggested but not formally assessed. We compare climates of the coming decades with climates drawn from six geological and historical periods spanning the past 50 My. Our study suggests that climates like those of the Pliocene will prevail as soon as 2030 CE and persist under climate stabilization scenarios. Unmitigated scenarios of greenhouse gas emissions produce climates like those of the Eocene, which suggests that we are effectively rewinding the climate clock by approximately 50 My, reversing a multimillion year cooling trend in less than two centuries." https://www.pnas.org/content/115/52/13288

Michael Hudson - Global Warming and U.S. National Security Diplomacy "Control of oil has long been a key aim of U.S. foreign policy. The Paris climate agreements and any other Green programs to reduce the pace of global warming are viewed as threatening the aim of dominating world energy markets by keeping economies dependent on oil under U.S. control. Also blocking U.S. willingness to help stem global warming is the oil industry’s economic and hence political power. Its product is not only energy but also global warming, along with plastic pollution. More" https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/08/06/global-warming-and-u-s-national-security-diplomacy/

Comment

U.S. diplomatic strategy is to make other countries dependent on vital materials that U.S. diplomats can use as an economic lever. An early example were the food sanctions imposed in the 1950s to spur resistance to Mao’s revolution in China. Canada broke the grain embargo. If other countries produce their energy by solar power, wind power or nuclear power, they will be independent of U.S. oil diplomacy and its threats to cut off their energy supplies, grinding their economies to a halt if they don’t endorse U.S. neoliberal economic policies. This explains why the Trump Administration withdrew from the Paris climate agreement to slow global warming.

In this case, using several existing studies, they hypothesise average global temperatures may reach 3C above pre-industrial levels by 2050. The effect of this would be to realise the “hothouse Earth” scenario in which the planet would be heading for at least another degree of warming. [...] This scenario would also put the world on track for 5C of warming by 2100. [...] The paper notes that scientists have already warned that warming of 4C is incompatible with an organised global community, would be devastating to the majority of ecosystems, and has a high probability of not being stable. The World Bank said the planet may be “beyond adaptation” to such conditions.

It is hard even to find words to capture the scale of the crimes they are contemplating. A small but telling example is a 500-page environmental assessment produced by Trump’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calling for cancelling new automotive emissions standards. They have a sound argument. The study projects that by the end of the century temperatures will have risen 4 degrees Centigrade. Auto emissions don’t add that much, and since the game is pretty much over, why not have fun while we can — fiddling while the planet burns.

It is an error, in my opinion, to seek some geopolitical strategy behind Trump’s various antics. He regularly makes his guiding principle quite clear, for example, in announcing his plans for the July 4 extravaganza — “Red Square on the Potomac” as the Financial Times described it acidly. Trump tweeted that the master of ceremonies would be “Your favorite president: Me.” That is indeed the guiding principle of the infantile megalomaniac who holds the future of the world in his grip — quite an amazing commentary on the human species.

Melting of Himalayan glaciers has doubled in recent years: Fast-paced warming is consistently affecting huge region, says new study "A newly comprehensive study shows that melting of Himalayan glaciers caused by rising temperatures has accelerated dramatically since the start of the 21st century." https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/06/190619142538.htm?fbclid=IwAR266UBovElfnyMG1-DDlDvigd0V6kRV1qv9AS8DbWZpUEYkYtwUwtCEqV8

Comment

A newly comprehensive study shows that melting of Himalayan glaciers caused by rising temperatures has accelerated dramatically since the start of the 21st century. The analysis, spanning 40 years of satellite observations across India, China, Nepal and Bhutan, indicates that glaciers have been losing the equivalent of more than a vertical foot and half of ice each year since 2000 -- double the amount of melting that took place from 1975 to 2000. The study is the latest and perhaps most convincing indication that climate change is eating the Himalayas' glaciers, potentially threatening water supplies for hundreds of millions of people downstream across much of Asia.
