China to ‘eavesdrop’ on alien life with giant, multimillion dollar radio telescope (VIDEO) " China has completed construction of the world’s largest radio telescope, which required the resettlement of more than 9,000 people. It will be used to hunt for signs of alien life in deep space. "
This thing is just massive. In comparison Puerto Rico's Arecibo Observatory is only 300 meter versus the 500 meters for this one. ‎- Hey, it's CAJ!
And yet, it will still not be the largest radio telescope I'm finding out. The RATAN-600 is bigger and has been working since 1974. It's structure is different though since it doesn't use a dish array like Arecibo does and FAST will. ‎- Hey, it's CAJ!
I wonder how you spec a giant antenna to pick up possible radio communication/transmissions of unknown everything. ‎- Eivind
The ultimate problem is that we can only find signals/transmissions that we can understand. We literally can't know what we don't know. ‎- Hey, it's CAJ!
@iphwin: Well, they'd have to use an electromagnetic carrier to be discovered by this thing (within some frequency range), but I think they're just searching for patterns initially. Maybe they won't recognize the ingenious coding/modulation until they've studied something judged to be a deliberate signal for some time :) ‎- Eivind
