I rewatched King Kong (the 2005 Peter Jackson version) last night. I remember people trashing the movie at the time but I thought it was pretty good. Kong actually gets a characterization. He comes off well - the humans don't. And I just discovered this Hollywood Reporter story from 2017 that summarizes how I felt rewatching it. [It's Time to Rethink Peter Jackson's 'King Kong' "History has been too unkind to the director's 2005 film, which should be remembered not as lumbering and mindless, but as majestic and mesmerizing." https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/king-kong-time-rethink-peter-jacksons-2005-movie-983493]

I watched the extended version and I have to admit there are some pretty crappy effects shots that weren't in the theatrical version. At least, I hope they weren't.

I remember it being good too! Lots of meta, plenty of creature-feature, what's not to like?

I've been a Peter Jackson fan since Heavenly Creatures. His filmmaking always pushes the envelope. I was wowed by "They Shall Not Grow Old," his WW1 doc. And now he's finishing up a Beatles doc!!!

And Andy Serkis. That guy is a force of nature.
