On a lark, I bought some Tom's Activated Black Charcoal Natural Toothpaste, and it's one of the most cognitive-dissonantly disturbing products I've ever used.

Correct. It basically looks like you are brushing your teeth with dirt. Very vibrantly/deeply-colored, foamy dirt.

Yeah, I've seen it but can't bring myself to try it.

just looking at the color, I'd expect it to taste like licorice, and then I'd be sorely disappointed.

@cogscilibrarian They do have fennel-flavored toothpaste, but it's not charcoal-y: https://www.tomsofmaine.com/products/oral-care/antiplaque-whitening-toothpaste/fennel

I think I can finish it as long as I brush with my eyes closed.

@cogscilibrarian: The argument is that it leaches 'harmful stuff' from your teeth IIRC? Word around College of Dentistry is it will damage your enamel (despite advertising) / is too abrasive. Little research available

seems like in order for charcoal to do any leaching, it would have to be on your teeth for far longer than the recommended 2 minutes of brushing?
