Well, fuck me sideways. Jury duty today went ahead but of course barely started the jury selection process. Therefore, tomorrow at 9am I'm back in the court room being potentially chosen to judge. This is just the thing for Yom Kippur, fasting and all. I'm being judged from the above, and I vend my own small judgement down.
The judge is a cheerful round woman that would pass for a soccer mom or a grocery store cashier 10 times out of 10.· Valera Fooksman 4
Update: after an exhausting day I am free to go. Out of 76 candidates, they ended up dismissing <10 "for cause" (meaning both sides agreed this is either an undue hardship or a whack job that better be passed), and 10 from each side as a "preemptive challenge" (meaning undesirable by one of the sides). Ended up selecting 12+2 stand-bys.· Valera Fooksman
The case was about a house burglary. The defendant is a repeated offender, represented by (I think) a public attorney. Prosecution will rely heavily on police testimonies.· Valera Fooksman
Questions both sides asked (or themes they explored): prejudice against police testimonies, trust/mistrust in circumstantial evidence (which, by jury instructions, will need to be considered equal with the direct evidence - color me confused), previous experience being a victim (particularly a burglary victim), legal knowledge/experience, being prejudiced against repeated offenders.· Valera Fooksman 1
