Napping Fox. First time shooting our neighborhood fox. I'd seen it around once previously, sitting in our driveway and staring at the bird feeder, but it didn't stick around long enough for me to grab the camera. Not sure why it decided to nap in the middle of our yard in 90+ degree humid weather.

Avian baseball fan… and its snack. A bold feathered fan decided to perch on the backstop for at least half an hour before swooping back into the nearby tree-line to snack on a previously caught squirrel. Then apparently decided it wanted a better view so moved to the scoreboard in the outfield.

What’s with these invasive "crazy" worms and why can’t we get rid of them? "They reproduce without mating and are rapidly chewing through soil across the US. But there’s still a lot we don’t know about "jumping" worms." https://www.vox.com/2021/5/5/22408390/crazy-jumping-worms-invasive-earthworm-garden-soil

Interesting, I hadn't known that earthworms weren't indigenous to the US to begin with.

@ronin: I think the only reason I knew was that there's a GIANT earthworm endemic to the prairie like area where I went to college, and it was almost wiped out. They've recently found living specimens in the wild, though, so it's thought to survive in spots where farming is less prevalent.

Sperm whales in 19th century shared ship attack information "Whalers’ logbooks show rapid drop in strike rate in north Pacific due to changes in cetacean behaviour" https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/mar/17/sperm-whales-in-19th-century-shared-ship-attack-information

Comment

"Sperm whales learned how to avoid human attacks in the 19th century by sharing information about them with each other, a new study by the United Kingdom's Royal Study concluded, The Guardian reports. The authors analyzed newly digitized logbooks detailing whaling in the north Pacific during that time and discovered the strike rate of harpoons fell by 58 percent within five years. That suggests sperm whales, which are very social creatures, underwent a "cultural evolution" (the timeframe is far too short for genetic evolution, Hal Whitehead, one of the authors of the study said) by communicating with each other. Behavioral changes that allowed them to evade their human hunters included abandoning their normal defensive positions used against orcas, their only natural predator."

Daughter noticed a sleeping deer in our backyard one morning after a lighter snowstorm earlier this week. Turns out there were 3 of them hiding out amongst the evergreens. Kept an eye on them throughout the day and they pretty much stayed put for the entire day, only venturing away at dusk. Then they got spooked by our rear neighbor returning from somewhere so hid in our bamboo patch until it got dark. They were gone the next day. https://www.flickr.com/photos/saeba/shares/czjE23

Comment

We have a few indentations in our back trees indicating deer snoozing. I’ve seen them once & spouse saw them another time. (about 1/4 acre of trees abutting other neighbors’ 1/4 acre of trees, so lots of trees).

Couldn’t resist @44progloves holiday sale so decided to check out what a Japanese style glove would be like. Decided to go with a more subdued look this time so kept it around one base color. However, their tan leather is actually darker than it appears in their glove builder so there isn’t as big of a brightness difference between their tan & oiled chestnut as I was expecting. It’s more of a difference in shade/coloration. Now to go over it with some glove oil to see how that affects the colors and start the break in process. 👍🏻
