Russia proposes superhighway linking New York and London "What if U.S. citizens could drive...to Asia? A new proposal from Russia would see the country connected to the United States by highway bridge as part of a massive superhighway crossing the length of Russia, ultimately linking New York and London." http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1097518_russia-proposes-su...

Ultimate road trip. ‎· ronin

If it does come to pass, I hope it includes the high-speed rail option. ‎· John B.

I was about to be excited... only, it doesn't end up near enough to me to be useful :P ‎· Jennifer D.

Yeah, I noticed that. ‎· John B.

I can't necessarily blame them; the bit to Seattle or Vancouver is very mountainous, and you have to deal with that for a good amount westward. ‎· Jennifer D.

It seems like the route as proposed would hit either Edmonton or Calgary and then Winnipeg, which might be important to get Canada's cooperation. West Coast cities could push for a better connection to it, but as you said, it looks like a difficult route. ‎· John B.

They're doing the road just for me. Don't think anyone else would be stupid enough to drive it end to end. @jenn2d2 just use I-90 to Seattle then pan-american highway north (which is I-5 in those parts) ‎· akm

You really wouldn't want to experience car trouble on at least half of that route. Make sure you pack a blanket and some bear-scare. ‎· Ken Morley

@kjmorley as someone who actually driven Moscow-Vladivostok in 2011, I can tell you that the nearest mechanic is no farther than 100 km from any point on the road - and that, unlike US, the cell phone works everywhere along the road. ‎· akm

I wonder if the delivery speed difference would be high enough to make shipping goods by truck from China by this road a reasonable choice, as opposed to an ocean vessel. ‎· 9000
Comment
@9000 it's not about speed, it's about the cost. There are planes if you want speed. ‎· akm

I'm thinking more about the severe weather conditions in northern Canada/Siberia. I wouldn't want to walk 100 km in it. :) ‎· Ken Morley

Shit! Erdoğan broke Putin too! He's too much interested in absurd projects like, creating a canal from Black Sea to Mediterranean just for the sake of doing it. ‎· fsniper

^ did the old canal break? ‎· IDDD

I meant after he broke himself. ‎· fsniper

Oh there is no canal but the Phosphorous. ‎· fsniper

@kjmorley just don't go there in winter - you have a month-month and a half or the summer (that is, more than +10C at noon) at the top of the road, guaranteed 3 months in Siberia. In fact in Siberia your main problem would be heat and HUGE horse flies. No, horse flies are worse. +35 is not that hot, even with 100% humidity. ‎· akm

Has there been any recent updates to this plan/vision? A trans-everything railway sounds awesome to me :) ‎· Eivind
Comment
@eivind i don't know much about it, but i think the plan stops at the eternal question "who's gonna pay for it?" ‎· IDDD
Comment
@mudak: Can China pay for it if we make a slight detour down to Beijing? :) ‎· Eivind

@dma: "as someone who actually driven Moscow-Vladivostok in 2011..." Proving further my theory that Ken Morley is an international spy/gadfly adventurer. I want to be like him when I grow up. ‎· MoTO Babycakes

@ MoTO No, that wasn't me. I've only been as far north as Prince George. Honestly! This sort of thing ain't my bag, baby. ‎· Ken Morley

@kjmorley: Correction: it appears that it's @dma that's an international spy/gadfly adventurer. My apologies to both of you. However, you're still my hero, Mr. Morley. ‎· MoTO Babycakes

I am. Bragging time! http://www.gpslib.ru/profile/dma/ - here's a collection of my GPS tracks. It has a nice overview image. It misses last like 3 years (Which mainly added to USA). ‎· akm
