This is a beautiful image, but it leaves out whole branches of Indo-European, mainly the Anatolian languages, among them the oldest attested Indo-European languages, and the Tocharian branch. Maybe she did not include them because these branches have died out long ago, but this still makes for a somehow distorted picture. She should have mentioned somewhere that she is taking into account only those groups whose descendants made it to the present time.

She makes it clear though that she is not going to mention "tiny languages": “Naturally, most tiny languages didn’t make it on the graph,” the artist explained to io9. “There’s literally hundreds of them in the Indo-European family alone and I could only fit so many on this page, so most sub-1 mil. speaker languages that don’t have the official status somewhere got the cut.”

Several languages spoken in a remote region of Afghanistan belong to a group called Nuristani. Many specialists have thought that these languages constitute a separate branch of Indo-Iranian. The problem is that they have been poorly studied because they are spoken in inaccessible and war-torn areas, and have no older literature, so their classification is difficult.
